Generations of the family
Nestorovski were grown up under the old walnut’s
trees
On the road of the caravans who
were traveling with horses from west Macedonia
toward Skopje at the entrance of the city in Saraj,
there was existing inn who was far and wide known as
“Saraj inn”. The inn was built by my
grandfather Nestor before 1870 and after that
inherited and managed by my father Seraphim. According to my father’s words,
nostalgic remembering on that time, the cellars of
the inn have had thousands of liters of wines and
also two or three thousand liters of strong brandy. In the 1912, when the Turks were
withdrawing from the Balkan, the inn was burned and
almost fully destroyed. My father was forced to
become a refugee to safe his life. When he returned, the inn was
robbed and all the wine and strong brandy in the
cellar were released. With borrowing from his
friends, the inn was restored. He revived it again
and was opened till 1935. Gradually, the caravans
were dying out under the pressure of the modern way
of trade and transportation. With railroad opening
Skopje-Kicevo, the inn stopped working for good.
Although I chose another
profession in my life, I never gave up from my
father’s testament to continue the family tradition.
In 1980, I was finally determined to open a
restaurant and together with a friend we adapted and
equipped the house which was the part of the famous
Saraj inn and in the same year on 1 st of August we
opened the restaurant. Because there were a lot of
walnut’s trees in the yard of the restaurant, we
decided to give it the name “Walnut’s shadow”.
The beginning was very modest
with a few tables and bottles. We used the same
tables for the summer garden under the walnut’s
trees. As time passed by, the restaurant
got an entirely new look still on the same place. The traditional and the modern
are appropriately combined in the nowadays look of
the “Walnut’s shadow” ‘s restaurant since 2004, when
the last time is expanded and restored under the
leadership of my children (the fourth generation
Nestorovi), Suzana and Ljubomir.
The restaurant “Walnut’s shadow”
wishes warm welcome to all devotees of the old
Macedonian kitchen based on authentic recipes
prepared by my grandfather Nestor. The restaurant is far and wide
famous not only because of the delicious kitchen,
but also the warm atmosphere next to the fireplace
in the winter and picturesque garden in the
summer. The restaurant has: own parking place,
children’s playground where the youngest can play
carelessly; a swimming pool with live traut in the
summer and the guests can fish and have the fish
immediately prepared on grill or under the coals in
the fireplace.
The wealth of the Nestorovski
family is in the continuation of the tradition,
while the success and pride are in the keeping and
cherishing the above.
Sincerely yours,
Nestor Nestorov |
